Installing LNM and joining an existing forest
Purpose & Scope
Follow this procedure to install LNM 2005 as a child domain for an existing parent domain
Procedure
Creating and configuring the Root (parent) Domain Controller:
- Install Windows 2003 sp1
- Configure the TCP/IP settings to have the DNS Pointing to itself.
- Run DCpromo And create a new domain in a new forest.
- IN DNS Registration Diagnostics Window select Install and Configure the DNS server on this computer, and set the computer to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server.
- Reboot the server
- Go to Start è Administrative Tools è component services.
- Expand Component Services è Computers and select My Computer
- Wait for My Computer icon to change from a folder icon to a computer icon (takes about 10 seconds)
- Right click my computer and select properties
- Open the MSDTC Tab and select Security Configuration
- Click ok to close the security configuration
- Click ok to close the properties page
- Right click my computer and select Stop MSDTC
- Right click my computer and select start MSDTC
- Close the Component Services
- Go to Start è Administrative Tools èDNS
- Right-click the root zone, click New Delegation, and then click Next.
- Click the Add Button
- Type in the full name of the ChildDomainController (dc2.child.parent.com) and type in the IP Address of that server and click Add
- Click OK
- Click Next
- Click Finish
- Close DNS management console
- Open the Start èRun
- Type Adminpak.msi and click ok
- Click Next Till the end for a basic default installation.
- Open the Start è Administrative Tools è DHCP
- Right click on DHCP and select manage Authorized Servers.
- Click Authorize and type in the Child LNM Server IP Address
- Click OK
- Click Close
- Close the DHCP
Creating and configuring the LNM (Child) Domain Controller:
- Install LNM and choose the 3rd topology
- Install DNS on the Child Domain Server
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
- Click Networking Services, and then click Details.
- Click to select the Domain Name System (DNS) check box, click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
- Create a Child Zone on the Child Domain Server
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, click DNS, right-click the appropriate server name, and then click New Zone. You can use the wizard to configure the child zone.
- Click Next, click Primary zone, and then click Forward lookup zone.
- Type a name for the child zone, such as child.mydomain.com. You can use default settings for the zone file information.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
- Make the Parent DNS server the Forwarder DNS for the Child Server
- Right click the ServerName and select properties
- Open the forwarders tab
- Type in the IP address of the Parent Domain Controller and click add.
- Click OK
- right-click My Network Places and then click Properties.
- Right-click the appropriate local connection and then click Properties.
- Under Components checked are used by this connection, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
- Click Use the following DNS server addresses:, make sure that the preferred DNS server is the parent (root) server.
- Promote the Child Domain Server
- To promote the server to a domain controller, click Start, click Run, type dcpromo, and then click OK.
- In DNS Registration Diagnostics Choose to Install and Configure the DNS server on this computer, and set the computer to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server
- Restart the Server.
- Go to Start è Administrative Tools è component services.
- Expand Component Services è Computers and select My Computer
- Wait for My Computer icon to change from a folder icon to a computer icon (takes about 10 seconds)
- Right click my computer and select properties
- Open the MSDTC Tab and select Security Configuration
- Click ok to close the security configuration
- Click ok to close the properties page
- Right click my computer and select Stop MSDTC
- Right click my computer and select start MSDTC
- Close the Component Services
- Enable Dynamic Updates
- Login to the server and Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, click DNS
- Right-click the child zone you just created, and then click Properties.
- In General tab click on change button beside the type line check store the zone in Active Directory click ok in dynamic update select secure only click OK.
- Right click ServerName->all tasks and then click restart
- right-click My Network Places and then click Properties.
- Right-click the appropriate local connection and then click Properties.
- Under Components checked are used by this connection, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
- Click Use the following DNS server addresses:, make sure that the preferred DNS server is the child IP address and add the parent (root) server as alternative DNS server.
- from the desktop click on continue LNM installation icon to continue LNM installation.
