Installing LNM and joining an existing forest

Purpose & Scope

Follow this procedure to install LNM 2005 as a child domain for an existing parent domain

Procedure

Creating and configuring the Root (parent) Domain Controller:

  1. Install Windows 2003 sp1
  2. Configure the TCP/IP settings to have the DNS Pointing to itself.
  3. Run DCpromo And create a new domain in a new forest.
  4. IN DNS Registration Diagnostics Window select Install and Configure the DNS server on this computer, and set the computer to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server.
  5. Reboot the server
  6. Go to Start è Administrative Tools è component services.
    1. Expand Component Services è Computers and select My Computer
    2. Wait for My Computer icon to change from a folder icon to a computer icon (takes about 10 seconds)
    3. Right click my computer and select properties
      1. Open the MSDTC Tab and select Security Configuration
      2. Click ok to close the security configuration
      3. Click ok to close the properties page
    4. Right click my computer and select Stop MSDTC
    5. Right click my computer and select start MSDTC
  7. Close the Component Services
  8. Go to Start è Administrative Tools èDNS
    1. Right-click the root zone, click New Delegation, and then click Next.
    2. Click the Add Button
    3. Type in the full name of the ChildDomainController (dc2.child.parent.com) and type in the IP Address of that server and click Add
    4. Click OK
    5. Click Next
    6. Click Finish
    7. Close DNS management console
  9. Open the Start èRun
  10. Type Adminpak.msi and click ok
  11. Click Next Till the end for a basic default installation.
  12. Open the Start è Administrative Tools è DHCP
    1. Right click on DHCP and select manage Authorized Servers.
    2. Click Authorize and type in the Child LNM Server IP Address
    3. Click OK
    4. Click Close
  13. Close the DHCP

Creating and configuring the LNM (Child) Domain Controller:

  1. Install LNM and choose the 3rd topology
  2. Install DNS on the Child Domain Server
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    3. Click Networking Services, and then click Details.
    4. Click to select the Domain Name System (DNS) check box, click OK, click Next, and then click Finish.
  3. Create a Child Zone on the Child Domain Server
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, click DNS, right-click the appropriate server name, and then click New Zone. You can use the wizard to configure the child zone.
    2. Click Next, click Primary zone, and then click Forward lookup zone.
    3. Type a name for the child zone, such as child.mydomain.com. You can use default settings for the zone file information.
    4. Click Next, and then click Finish.
  4. Make the Parent DNS server the Forwarder DNS for the Child Server
    1. Right click the ServerName and select properties
      1. Open the forwarders tab
      2. Type in the IP address of the Parent Domain Controller and click add.
      3. Click OK
  5. right-click My Network Places and then click Properties.
    1. Right-click the appropriate local connection and then click Properties.
    2. Under Components checked are used by this connection, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
    3. Click Use the following DNS server addresses:, make sure that the preferred DNS server is the parent (root) server.
  6. Promote the Child Domain Server
    1. To promote the server to a domain controller, click Start, click Run, type dcpromo, and then click OK.
    2. In DNS Registration Diagnostics Choose to Install and Configure the DNS server on this computer, and set the computer to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server
  7. Restart the Server.
  8. Go to Start è Administrative Tools è component services.
    1. Expand Component Services è Computers and select My Computer
    2. Wait for My Computer icon to change from a folder icon to a computer icon (takes about 10 seconds)
    3. Right click my computer and select properties
      1. Open the MSDTC Tab and select Security Configuration
      2. Click ok to close the security configuration
      3. Click ok to close the properties page
    4. Right click my computer and select Stop MSDTC
    5. Right click my computer and select start MSDTC
    6. Close the Component Services
  9. Enable Dynamic Updates
    1. Login to the server and Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, click DNS
    2. Right-click the child zone you just created, and then click Properties.
    3. In General tab click on change button beside the type line check store the zone in Active Directory click ok in dynamic update select secure only click OK.
    4. Right click ServerName->all tasks and then click restart
  10. right-click My Network Places and then click Properties.
    1. Right-click the appropriate local connection and then click Properties.
    2. Under Components checked are used by this connection, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
    3. Click Use the following DNS server addresses:, make sure that the preferred DNS server is the child IP address and add the parent (root) server as alternative DNS server.
  11. from the desktop click on continue LNM installation icon to continue LNM installation.
